John Greathouse born about 1778 died July 4, 1866

From the census reports that list the place of his birth, as well as the census reports for his children when they list a birthplace for their father, we know that John Greathouse was born in Virginia . His birth date would have been between 1778 and 1782 and is estimated from his tombstone, census reports, and his personal testimony. We believe he was born in Monongalia, Yohogania or Ohio Counties, all formed in 1776, because those counties have records of Greathouse families at the time he was born.

What we do not know is the name of his father. We also do not have any documents showing him or his location from his birth until 1806 when we find a consent for a marriage license and marriage bond filed in Mason County, September 17, 1806.  Sarah McDade's father, James McDade , was one of the earliest settlers of Mason County and was a Revolutionary War Soldier.

Her parents signed a request for license and consent for marriage of John Greathouse and Sarah McDade reads as follows:

1806 County Court Mason Co.  Re: Gratehouse, John and McDade, Sarah
September 17, 1806 Sirs - please to let John Parson have lisins for John Gratehouse Sary McDade for they are willing
James McDade Rachel McDade

We do not know of any prior marriages.

There is a reference in Hardesty's History of Jackson County (VA) that John Greathouse was an early settler, coming some time after 1796 but with no specific date. His son's obituary reports that he 'came from Harrison County (VA)' but does not say he was born there.

John served in the war of 1812 and information about his service is in the National Archives through his application for bounty land from his service.  A copy of his discharge paper has been preserved, along with his application for land grant

We only know of the children listed in his estate settlement. He had nine children born from 1807 to 1833 all in the state of Virginia. Those children are:

Other children attributed to him, such as Isaac and Betsy have never been documented. A son Wyley attributed to John was actually a grandson. John appears to have died without a will, so we believe the heirs listed in his estate settlement in Roane County West Virginia, and who received equal distribution, were his natural children.

There is a gap of about 8 years from 1818 to 1826 when we do not find records of him or his children. He does not appear in the 1820 census or the information has been lost.

John died July 4, 1866. His death date is confirmed through records in National Archives from his application for land grant for service in War of 1812. He is buried at Spencer Memorial Cemetery in Roane County WV.  The age is clearly read as 88 years, but the remainder of information after that is not clear.  Photos of tombstones for John and Sarah McDade Greathouse, courtesy of Ted McMullen

Dates of birth for his children are recorded, or are estimated from marriage and census records or tombstones. If no date appears in the listing below, such as for a marriage, it is because no reliable source has been found. We are seeking to connect John with a Greathouse family who would have been in Virginia in 1778 and with a father who would likely have been born around 1750 and not later than around 1760.

We still need confirmation of marriage dates for son Samuel William Greathouse and Sudna/Sidney Tanner, and a confirmation that the marriage of William Henry Greathouse and Nancy Jane Hicks was in 1852 and whether James Washington Greathouse was their son or from a prior marriage. Parents are William and Joanna on James' marriage record. We show second marriages for William Henry, Sarah and John Jr.

We need a month and day of birth for William Henry, Samuel William, Solomon and James. We need a month and day of birth for spouses Nancy Jane Hicks, Sudna Tanner, Nancy Ashley and Matthew McMullen. For many of the grandchildren, their names and year of birth were obtained from census reports, so the month and day is often missing.

On occasion we may have erroneously believed that a grandchild living in the home was a child if the relationship is not stated, but we believe most are correctly listed. Because county lines changed from Jackson to Wirt to Roane, some counties showing on documents, such as death certificates, show the present county name, not the name at the time the event occurred. The following time line covers John, his children and grandchildren and a timeframe from of about one hundred years.
