Samuel William Greathouse ca. 1814 to ca. 1900

We do not have an exact birth date or a marriage date or location or exact date of death.

Samuel William Greathouse was a son of John and Sarah McDade Greathouse as established by his being an heir in his father's estate.  Samuel was born sometime between 1810 and 1820, probably about 1814.  His middle name William is from a Civil War record and the 1880 census report.  The 1840
census shows him between the ages of 20 and 30 and he is 32 in the 1850 census.  He is 44 in the 1860 census, but in January 1865 he gave his age as 52.
The 1870 census shows him age 54, but the 1880 census shows him as 66. The 1900 census shows him as age 88.

All records show him born in Virginia.  Although his father, John, is showing as a Mason County personal property taxpayer for the years of 1809 through 1814, the 1860 census shows Samuel's place of birth as Kanawha County, as does a Civil War record.  His father, John Greathouse, said he was drafted in Mason county sometime in May in 1814.  Mason County was formed from Kanawha in 1804.  There is no record of Samuel nor his father from around 1814 until 1831 when Samuel's father is showing in the Jackson County Personal Property Book with two white males who are age 16 and up.
Samuel had three older brothers, so it is not certain if Samuel was over or under age 16 in 1831.  Jackson County was created in 1831, from parts of Mason, Kanawha and Wood counties.  John Greathouse appears in the Jackson County census of 1840, but there are no names of children.  Two males are between the ages of 15 to 20.

Samuel Greathouse probably married about 1839 in Jackson county.  A son was born about 1840, but no record has been found of Samuel's marriage.Searches of marriage records for Jackson County found nothing.  A search has not been made in Kanawha County.    His wife is shown as Sudna/Sidney Grace Tanner, daughter of Samuel and Sudna Elizabeth Carpenter Tanner.  Samuel Tanner was a brother of Rachel Tannerwho was Samuel Greathouse's maternal grandmother.  It is believed that Samuel Greathouse's wife was born between 1818 and 1823 from her ages in census reports.

Samuel Greathouse appears as head of household in the 1840 census of Jackson County with one male age 20-30, one female age 20-30 and one male age 0-5.
The male child is probably Jesse who shows as age 10 in the 1850 census. Jesse shows county of birth as Jackson in the 1860 census.

Samuel and family next show in the 1850 census of Wirt County Virginia. Samuel's family is listed between Isaac Blosser and Mathew Mullen.  Isaac Blosser's sister was married to Edward, a brother of Samuel, and Mathew was married to Sarah, a sister of Samuel.  The census shows Samuel Greathouse age 32, born in VA with his wife and all his children born in Virginia also. Wife Sidney is age 27, Jesse is age 10, Sarah J is age 9, Judith age 8, Mahala age 3, and William age 1. There is also a William M age 18 born in Virginia and listed as laborer.

Sims Index to West Virginia Land Grants shows a Samuel Greathouse 318 acres on Rowel's Run in 1860 Book 1, page 491 Calhoun County, VA.  Since the family is listed in the Calhoun County Census in 1860, they must have moved there around this time because daughter Eliza was born in Calhoun County around 1860.

The 1860 Calhoun County Virginia Census shows Samuel Greathouse age 44 and born in Kanawha County.  His wife is showing as Sudner, age 31 and also born in Kanawha County Virginia.  Children showing born in Jackson County are Sarah J age 19, Judith age 17, Mahala age 12, William age 10, Joseph age 8.
Children born in Roane County are Nancy J age 5, Salina age 4, Mary E age 2. Child born in Calhoun County is Eliza A less than one year.

Son Jesse is in 1860 census of Calhoun County in his own household, age 20 and married with wife Elizabeth and son John.

It is thought the following reference in a Civil War diary refers to same Samuel Greathouse.  "Wednesday, May 7, 1862: Left (Adam) Starcher's and camped at Sam Greathouse's on the West Fork. Everything quiet. Weather delightful."

Samuel Greathouse joined the Confederate Army and is listed with the 19th VA Cavalry from Calhoun County Virginia.  From: 19th and 20th Virginia Cavalry, 1st Edition, by Richard L Armstrong, Lynchburg, VA: H E Howard, Inc., 1994:  "GREATHOUSE, Samuel William, Company A, 3rd Virginia State Line (Moccasin Rangers). Samuel age 54 and Sidney age 51 are showing in the 1870 Census for Roane County West Virginia.  Saline, Elizabeth and Anna are still living at home.

On January 27, 1870 Roane County West Virginia marriage records show William Greathouse, age 21 born in Jackson County, living in Roane County, son of Samuel and Sydney married Melissa J Wright, age 17, born in Jackson and living in Roane, daughter of Jackson and Emaline Wright.  In 1900 census
they are living in the Lee District of Calhoun County.

On June 26, 1870, Roane County West Virginia marriage records show Joseph Greathouse, age 18 born in Jackson County, living in Roane, son of Samuel and Sidney Greathouse married Catherine Webb age 24, born in Russell County, living in Roane, daughter of Joseph and Christina Webb.  In the 1870 census

1880 Census for Roane County West Virginia shows Samuel William Greathouse age 66 and Sidner age 63.  None of their children are living at home.  They are showing living in the house hold of their son-in-law William Webb and daughter Elizabeth.

Census for 1890 is not available.

A Samuel Greathouse age 88 born March 1812 married for 60 years and a widower was an inmate at Spencer 2nd Hospital for the insane in 1900 in Spencer, Roane County West Virginia.  It is believed that this is probably the same Samuel because of age, location and the length of his marriage.

Children believed to be those of Samuel William Greathouse are listed below. Some people list a John, but I have not found a record of him.

In most cases I have found the marriage records in Roane County VA/WV for these children.  It is difficult to find actual dates of birth or death.  I found the death certificates for Mary Elizabeth, William M. and for Eliza Jane at the West Virginia Division of Culture and History.

The years and sometimes months for the other children are taken from census records, marriage records and/or from family histories.
