1772, Jun 9 - Journal: Rev. David Jones, Tour of Ohio River

Excerpts from Journal of Rev. David Jones:

"Tuesday June 9, left Fort Pitt in company with Mr. George Rogers Clark, and several others, who were disposed to make a tour through this new world. We traveled by water in a canoe, and as I laboured none, had an opportunity of observing the courses of the river. . . From Fort Pitt the river Ohio runs about fifteen miles near a N. W. course; thence near N. about 14 miles; then it makes a great bent for about 20 miles running a little S. of W. thence for near 20 miles S. E. to the place called the Mingo town, where some of that nation yet reside. Some of this town were want to plunder canoes, therefore we passed them as quietly as possible; and were happy as not to be discovered by any of them. From this town to Grave Creek is about thirty miles, and the river, taking the meanders of it, may be said to run a little W. of S. Met here with my interpreter, who came across the country from the waters of Monongahela, and with him some Indians, with whom I had little conversation. This night my bed was gravel stones by the river side. From Fort Pitt to this creek [Grave Creek] we were only in one house inhabited by white people. All the way our lodging was on the banks of the river, which at first did not suit me, but custom made it more agreeable."

"Tuesday July 14, in company with messrs. Clark, Higgins and my interpreter, set out for Fort Pitt; and as it was sometime before the Indians would be at Fort Pitt, took another tour through the desarts to Ohio. Preached on the Lord's day in a cabbin near to creek called Weeling [Wheeling], to about 15 auditors."

Footnotes:

1) On 9 Jun 1772, Rev. Jones related in his journal that there was only one house inhabited by white people along the Ohio River, between Fort Pitt and Wheeling Creek. The one cabin along Wheeling Creek, was probably the settlement of Ebenezer Zane, who settled along Wheeling Creek about 1769.

2) Based upon the journal entries of Rev. Jones, it would be plausible to conclude that, there were no Greathouse settlements along the Ohio River between Fort Pitt and Wheeling Creek before 14 Jul 1772. This conclusion gains additional support from the land entries made in 1780, by Harmon Greathouse, John Greathouse, William Greathouse and Gabriel Greathouse, heir at law of Daniel Greathouse, for lands they settled on Harmons Creek, Cross Creek and the waters of Ohio in 1773.
