Ohio County Chronology

1776, Nov 8 - OHIO (W.Va.), MONONGALIA (W.Va.) and YOHOGANIA (extinct) created by Virginia from West Augusta District; OHIO (W.Va.), MONONGALIA (W.Va.) and YOHOGANIA (extinct) overlapped territory claimed by Pennsylvania in WESTMORELAND, WASHINGTON and FAYETTE. (Cappon, Petchenik, and Long, 93; Hening, 9:262-274)

1780, Oct 31 - [October 1780] OHIO lost to WESTMORELAND (Pa.) when Pennsylvania regained effective jurisdiction of the Pittsburgh region from Virginia. (Crumrine, Boundary Controversy, 521-523; Van Zandt, 83)

1785, Oct 31 - [October 1785] OHIO gained all of YOHOGANIA (Va.); YOHOGANIA County eliminated. (Hening, 12:114)

1797, May 1 - OHIO lost to creation of BROOKE. (Shepherd, 2:54-55)

1805, May 1 - OHIO lost to HARRISON. (Shepherd, 3:174-175)

1814, Dec 6 - OHIO lost to creation of TYLER. (Robinson, 88; Va. Acts 1814-1815, ch. 40, sec. 1/pp. 87-89)

1820, Jan 1 - Ohio River and its islands, previously unassigned to particular counties, were declared to be part of the adjacent Virginia counties, including OHIO [not mapped]. (Va. Acts 1819-1820, ch. 74, sec. 1/p. 66)

1835, May 1 - OHIO lost to creation of MARSHALL. (Va. Acts 1834-1835, ch. 57, secs. 1, 16/pp. 38-40)

1863, May 1 - OHIO separated from Virginia and became a county in the state of West Virginia. (Swindler, 10:363)
