Greathouse kith and kin who settled or camped in Augusta County, VA between 1771 and 1776, have been documented in the following areas of the county:

2) Greathouse Along Ohio River - This collection will cover Greathouse kith and kin who settled or camped:

  • along Cross and Harmon Creek, near present-day Weirton, WV;
  • along Grave Creek, near present day Moundsville, WV;
  • along the Little Kanawha River, near present-day Parkersburg, WV;
  • along the Great Kanawha River, near present-day Point Pleasant, WV, which was referred to as, "the camp of Point Pleasant, at the mouth of the Great Kanawha", in a letter dated 17 Oct 1774, which was published in Williamsburgh, VA on 10 Nov 1774;
  • And along the Big SandyRiver, near present-day Kenova, WV.

1767 - Settlement: Frederick Ice settled at Ice's Ford in 1767

1771, Mar - Survey Party: William Crawford

William Crawford of Stewart's Crossing, Bedford County, PA, was granted a commission, under the authority of the Executive Council in 1769 and 1771, to survey most of the lands on the Ohio and Kanawha rivers for the military land grants, which were due soldiers who fought in the Virginia Militia, commanded by Colonel George Washington after the French and Indian War.

1773, Oct 11 - WEST AUGUSTA DISTRICT created by Virginia from AUGUSTA. WEST AUGUSTA DISTRICT overlapped territory claimed by Pennsylvania. (Abernethy, 94)

1776, Nov 8 - District of West Augusta was abolished by Virginia upon the creation of MONONGALIA (W.Va.), OHIO (W.Va.) and YOHOGANIA (W.Va.) from West Augusta District and HAMPSHIRE (W.Va.); MONONGALIA, OHIO and YOHOGANIA overlapped territory claimed by Pennsylvania. (Cappon, Petchenik, and Long, 93; Hening, 9:262-274)
