Fayette County was created from Westmoreland County in 1783. Land in Southwest Pennsylvania including Fayette County was claimed by both Pennsylvania and Virginia for several years. Virginia claimed the area as part of the West Augusta District and after 1776 as parts of Monongalia, Ohio or Yohogania counties of Virginia. At the same time this area was claimed by Pennsylvania, and deeds to lands were being issued by both Virginia and Pennsylvania, resulting in many disputed claims to land ownership. Finally in 1786, Virginia formally terminated her claims to jurisdiction in the disputed areas and parts of the Virginia counties were ceded to Pennsylvania.
