1772 - Tax Assessment: Brothersvalley Township

Second Assessment List.- This assessment list was taken for Brothersvalley Township of Bedford County (this township included all of what is now Somerset County lying west of the Allegheny Mountain), created in 1772 for Year 1773 taxes.

Greathouse, William; resident [freeholder], 200 acres, 10 acres cleared.
Aker, Frederick; inmate [married renters heading households were called “inmates”].

Footnotes:

1) Cited sources appear to have confused this tax assessment as the first tax assessment created in 1772 for year 1773 taxes. However the first tax assessment created in fall 1771 for Year 1772 taxes, in which Frederick Aker was named as a single freemen has been confirmed in two earlier cited sources. Therefore this tax assessment list has been noted as the "Second Assessment List" for Brothersvalley Township.

2) Between tax assessment lists created in the fall of 1771 and 1772, the status of Frederick Aker changed from single freemen to inmate, or a married renter taxed as head of household. This would suggest that Frederick Aker probably married Mary Greathouse between 1771 and 1772. Frederick and Mary Greathouse Aker were both named as heirs in the will of William Greathouse Sr. which was probated in Harrison County, VA, in 1792, with Mary Greathouse Aker also named as a daughter of William Greathouse Sr.

2) If Mary Greathouse was between age 18 and 21, at the time of her marriage in 1771 or 1772, then she would have been born between 1750/51 and 1753/54.
