1771, Apr 16 - First Court Was Held At Bedford, PA on April 16, 1771 Excerpt from Boyd Crumrine, The County Court for the District of West Augusta, Virginia: The county seat of Bedford County was at Bedford about one hundred miles east from Pittsburg, where its first court was held on April 16, 1771, and George Wilson living near the mouth of George's Creek in what is now southern Fayette County; Captain William Crawford, living on the Youghiogheny opposite what is now Connellsville; Thomas Gist, living at Mount Braddock, near Uniontown; and Dorsey Pentecost, then living on his tract called "Greenaway" in the Forks of the Yough", but in 1777, removing to the East Branch of Chartiers Creek, were justices of the peace and judges of the county courts. Virginia at this date had not yet extended the jurisdiction of her courts over Western Pennsylvania.

1773, Jul - Turkeyfoot Township created from Brothersvalley Township Excerpt: Somerset County [PA] Outline, Page 260 Turkeyfoot Township was established out of the western part of Brothersvalley Township by the Bedford County Court in July 1773. It included nearly all of the western half of the present area of Somerset County and the southwestern corner of what is now Cambria County. Turkeyfoot Township contained many of the first settlers of Somerset County. This township was so named because of the peculiar conjunction of the three streams which unite where Confluence Borough is now located. Some of the first settlers of the Turkeyfoot Region were Henry Abrahams, James Spencer, Richard Hoagland and Benjamin Jennings. Henry Abrahams built a cabin on the point of land between the Youghiogheny and the Casselman Rivers in 1765. James Spencer lived on the point of land between the Casselman River and Laurel Hill Creek at about the same time. Richard Hoagland owned a large tract of land lying east of the Youghiogheny River on both sides of the Braddock Road. He had the most cleared land in what is now Somerset County, the first assessment was made in 1772. He had seventy-one acres of cleared land at that time. Benjamin Jennings' land was located between Confluence and Ursina Boroughs. Other early settlers of this same region were Oliver Drake, Andrew Friend, William Greathouse, Thomas Green, John Friggs, John Pursley, Augustine Friend, Danes Pursley, John Reed and Henry Smith. (The names of all the early settlers of Turkeyfoot Township can be found in the five different assessment lists which have been submitted for this township in "First Settlers" in Chapter XI of this work.)

1777 - Military Service: Deposition of John Greathouse given before court of Harrison County, VA on 19 May 1818. That he the said John Greathouse enlisted in the Bedford County State of Pennsylvania in the year 1777 in Captain Kilgores Company of the 8 Pennsylvania regiment of Regualar commanded by Col. _________ [Aeneas Mackay] and afterwards Commanded by Col. Broadhead that he continue to service in the same Corps for the Term of three years when he was discharged at Pittsburg in march 1780 and received the accompaning discharge that he was in the battles of Brandywine, Germantown and Paoli. These individuals migrated to Harrison County, VA, arriving there by Aug 1786, at the latest. They were recorded on the Tax List: Harrison County, VA, starting in 1787.

Jacob Harsel [Hartsel] and Michael Oswald, Esquires, were appointed and commissioned Justices of the Peac, the former for district of Turkey Foot, and the latter for the district of Londonderry, in the county of Bedford, upon returns made according to law. Jacob Harsel [Hartsel] and Michael Oswald, Esquires, were also appointed and commissioned Justices of the Court of Common Pleas in and for the county aforesaid.

Notes : This Jacob Hartzel may have been the spouse of Catherine Greathouse, daughter of William Greathouse Sr., who died in Harrison County, VA in 1792.
