1685: John Elder vs. Harmon Greathouse and Lodwick Wampler. FR. Contract to purchase land.

John ELDER vs Harmon GREATHOUSE and Lodwick WAMPLER – Contract to Purchase - 3 Apr 1789
[MSA S512- 1756; 1/36/2/31-1685; 2 folders ]

On 25 May 1783, John ELDER of Baltimore County delivered bond to Harmon GREATHOUSE for 510 pounds cm of MD and since paid it; but, Greathouse (a weaver) sold the bond to Lodwick WAMPLER who petitioned the court for a judgment against Elder which came to be 980 pounds of tobacco. Greathouse signed over the bond, which included John TOWSON’s name jointly with Elder, on 4 Jun 1787.

Footnotes:

1) On 26 May 1783, Harmon Greathouse bound himself for 500 pounds and agreed to transfer Hermans Valley, 10 acres, which Greathouse had obtained from Robert Marshall in 1759, to John Elder of Baltimore County.

2) A conflict of occupation has been noted between the 1789 court record, which related the occupation of Harmon Greathouse as a weaver and the 1765 and 1783 deeds, regarding the transfer of Watson's Trust, 10 acres, to/from Harmon Greathouse, in which the occupation of Harmon Greathouse was related as a blacksmith. Such a conflict could be explained by either a change in occupation as Harmon Greathouse aged; or a Harmon Greathouse Sr. could have been represented in the land transfers of Hermans Valley, 10 acres, in 1759 and 1783, while a Harmon Greathouse Jr. could have been represented by the land transfers of Watson's Trust, 10 acres, in 1765 and 1783.

3) Two men by the name of Harmon Greathouse were named as heads of their own households in the 1790 census of Baltimore County, MD.

4) If a Harmon Greathouse Jr. purchased Watson's Trust, 10 acres, in 1765, after he had attained the "lawful age of 21", then Harmon Greathouse Jr. would have been born about 1744.

(not recorded)

Footnotes:

1) A Harmon Greathouse, age 75, on 17 Jan 1792, would have been born about 1717.
