Deposition A - Case of William H. Greathouse for Pension, Claim 261415

Q. Where did you reside at your enlistment?
A. "I resided on Spring Creek of Roane County, West Virginia (near Spencer, the County Seat). I was born and raised there."

Q. After your discharge, where did you go and what did you do?
A. "I went to Elkview of Kanawha County, West Virginia and was engaged in logging with John Hall, who at that time lived in Charleston, West Virginia." This is twelve miles east of Charleston.

Q. Where did you go from Elkview, West Virginia?
A. "Can't say. I traveled and had no settled home and doctored sore eyes and cancers until I moved to Wolf Creek near Grayson, Carter Co. KY in 1866. I lived on that Creek for one year then moved to this farm in 1867 and have been here ever since. I live in Gimlet, Elliott Co. KY, but I get my mail at Whitt P.O. of Carter Co. KY. I have doctored for a living as long as I was able to travel and hired my farming. William Counts, John Counts, John Lewis, and John Walker were my closest neighbors on Wolf Creek. Jessie Rose, Silas Maggard, John J. Whitt, Wilson Maggard, and Ambrose J. Bear are now my closest neighbors."

William Greathouse household.
Greathouse, William H. (Union); private; Company H, 13th Virginia (vol) Infantry; date of enlistment: 1861; date of discharge: 1865; length of service: 4 years. Wounded 5 or 6 times and suffering badly at the present.

1890, Aug 30 - Letter to Hon. G. B. Rains, Commissioner of Pensions, Washington, D. C.; Subject: Original Invalid Claim for Pension, Case No. 261415 of William H. Greathouse, Private, Company H, 13th West Virginia Infantry Regiment, P. O. Whitt, Carter County, from J. H. Vansant, Clerk of Elliott County, KY, 30 Aug 1890.

In the body of two page letter, Vansant stated several written statements are to be prepared by his office and sent by separate letter to the Commissioner of Pensions upon completion of the interview and deposition of  fellow soldiers (James C. Blair and George W. Turner), who served with William Henry Greathouse

In addition, on page two of this letter, J. H. Vansant stipulates, "a written statement should be secured from Washington Greathouse of Millard, Roane County, West Virginia giving a detailed history of his war injuries and disabilities.  This Washington Greathouse is a son of the claimant - who has two living wives.  One residing near his son, Washington Greathouse."

Note: In the package received from the National Archives, the separate depositions of James C. Blair and George W. Turner were included. A written statement or deposition for J. W. "Washington" Greathouse was not included.

1891, Nov 10 - Death of William Henry Greathouse Sr.

William Henry Greathouse, Sr. died on 10 Nov 1891 on his 115 acre farm in Gimlet, Elliott County, KY and is buried on Greathouse Knob.

1895 - Death of Mary A. Young Greathouse

Mary A. Young Greathouse died and was buried beside her husband on Greathouse Knob in the winter of 1895.

1896 - Land Sale: William Henry Greathouse, Jr.

William Henry Greathouse, Jr., sold the 115 acre farm in the Summer of 1896 and moved to the head of Alcorn Road in Greenup, Greenup County, KY and established residence on a 500 acre farm.
